The most urgent questions concerning our future can only be solved at international level. This holds true even more in today's globalised world. Climate change, air and water pollution, poverty and disease, resource scarcity and resource conflicts, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction: all these problems do not stop at national borders. International security has to be redefined and the debate broadened in order to include environmental and developmental issues.
This is the analytical basis for my work as coordinator for international affairs and human rights. I share the values stated by Kofi Annan: Freedom from need and fear, and the freedom to live a dignified life should become the cornerstones of international politics.
The European concept and European institutions are both the consequence of and answer to the dynamics of globalisation. I consider the political and institutional framework of the European Union as a paradigm for the multilateral approach that we need for today´s world. In my work I will therefore always emphasise the further advancement of the EU. The current crisis of citizen support for the EU can only be overcome if the people perceive Europe as representing both economic progress and social cohesion, as securing peace and ensuring ecological sustainability.
