I have been active in the Green Party since my youth. Much has changed in recent years – but not my political aims. I want an outward-looking, multicultural society based on solidarity, in which ecological issues rate among the highest on our scale of values.

This includes a modern, forward-looking civil rights policy. Citizens' democratic participation rights must be expanded and civil rights strengthened. One specific aim is that popular initiatives, petitions for referendums and referendums should be enshrined in the German constitution, the Basic Law.

As spokesman on migration policy for my parliamentary group, in the 15th legislative period of the  Bundestag I argued for an Immigration Act which would introduce a genuine reform of Germany's aliens law, with the aim of achieving a modern, outward-looking and humane immigration and refugee law.

One element of my work that I find particularly interesting is my position as spokesman on the Petitions Committee, where we parliamentarians focus on citizens' requests and complaints. Many suggestions and ideas from petitions and submissions feed into the policies of the Alliance 90/The Greens parliamentary group and into the design and formulation of legislation. On this committee, I have been able to experience how citizens and parliamentarians from all parties jointly help to develop our political system further.
