Deputy Chairperson of the Parliamentary Group
Policy Coordinator, Working Group 2
I was politically schooled during the 1970s by the anti-atomic power, the women's and the peace movements. During the 1980s I was involved with a citizen's initiative to improve day care for pre-schoolers, and from there I went into local politics to fight successfully against the construction of a hazardous waste incinerator. In 1995 I became the first Green agricultural minister and placed consumer protection in the foreground, particularly through the discussion on BSE. In terms of environmental policy I have pushed for the creation of new jobs through the efficient use of resources and the application of renewable energy and raw materials. In 2000 I also became responsible for one-world policy and began to support fair trade and raise awareness on the issue here in Germany.
