Spokesperson on financial policy
I studied Economics and have been dealing with finances ever since. As the fiscal spokesman of the parliamentary group and chairman of the finance committee, the financial markets and taxes are the focus of my work. Well organised and regulated fiscal policy can be a lever for climate protection and help encourage investments and innovation. The international financial crisis during the summer of 2007 clearly showed that transparency, national and transnational control and regulation have to be improved in order to guarantee the proper functioning of the international capital markets. International regulations have to be especially defined for hedge funds in order to establish transparency and reduce risks. Such regulations are no end in themselves; they enhance confidence in the international capital markets and limit the risks that could trigger new crises. It is imperative to establish fair tax laws within an international context. I am accordingly in favour of unified company taxation in the European Union because the integrated EC domestic market needs a basis for healthy tax competition.
Regulation and transparency of the capital markets form part of the concept of the "Green Market Economy", of which I was one of the authors. The maxim of this concept is to strictly align economical activity with ecological principles.
I studied Economics in Germany and Spain and received my PhD in Political Science from the University of Freiburg-im-Breisgau.
