Spokesperson on drugs and addiction policy
My work focuses on preserving and strengthening solidarity in society. Solidarity means taking responsibility for each other – especially in difficult times. As a physician I learned how important a fair health care policy is. Everybody should make their financial contribution to a citizens' health insurance – each person according to their ability to pay. As a father, I know that we still have a long way to go to make Germany a child-friendly country.
My political commitment was and still is strongly influenced by the collapse of the Communist system in East Germany in 1989. As an active member of the civil rights movement in the former GDR, I represented my hometown of Rostock in the "Federal Council of Spokesmen" (Republiksprecherrat). From 1990 to 1994, I was parliamentary group leader of Alliance 90 on Rostock city council. I was re-elected to the city council in 1999.
After being involved in local politics for such a long time, I now strive to develop and implement Green policies at national level. As the only Green delegate from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania at the Bundestag, I also want serve the interests of the region I come from.
