When I read D. Meadows' book "The Limits to Growth" as a trainee physicist back in the early 1970s it became clear to me that we would have to move from a situation of global population growth driven by the exploitation of natural resources towards a more ecological and sustainable approach. As a manager at an international group of companies in the 1980s I learned that social justice is not just a task for the politicians, but very much one for the business community and managers as well. Numerous journeys, especially to China in the 1990s, showed me the catastrophic impact of environmental destruction and brought me a step closer to becoming actively involved in Green politics. In the end, I joined the Greens in 2004 with the aim of helping to combine economic and ecological factors. This is an area I began to implement above all in my work in the State Working Group on the Economy and Finance in Bavaria, as well as in my County Association and on Landshut City Council. "Think globally, act locally" – that is my motto, and it is a very fitting one too, given the urgent need to achieve an energy policy turnaround. Another topic we dealt with repeatedly in the State Working Group was the worrying and unacceptable growth in the degree of disparity between people's incomes and asset holdings in Germany. Here, we developed proposals to reverse this development, such as the minimum wage or reduced non-wage labour costs for low wage-earners. As a newly elected Member of Parliament, I plan to continue this work in the Bundestag as well.
