The so-called "Dairy Farmers' Revolt" proved the point. Times have moved on in rural areas. Farmers no longer unthinkingly vote for the CDU/CSU. Even the Farmers' Association is ever less widely accepted as a legitimate representative of farmers' interests. For us Greens, this growing alienation of many farmers from the supposed representatives of their interests is both an opportunity and a challenge. It is an opportunity because there are now many areas of political consensus with farmers. At various events in recent years I was greeted warmly when I spoke on topics such as milk quotas, genetic engineering or industrial livestock farming. It is a challenge because we still have to do a great deal to overcome the cultural differences between the Greens and those who live and work in rural areas. To achieve this, we need recognisable personalities to campaign authentically for the needs of rural areas. It is here that I see my task for the coming years. I want to make it clear that it is the Greens who are most interested in upholding sustainable agriculture. I am absolutely convinced that sustainable agriculture is the only way to safeguard ecological and socially sustainable development in rural areas.
