Spokesperson on energy policy

I was born on 7 January, 1952, in Hammelburg, which is renowned for its wine and solar technology. I am married and have three children.

After my studies of Physics and Sports Science I worked as a teacher for physics and sports from 1979 until 1998. I was then city councillor in Hammelburg (Unterfranken) from 1990 until I was elected to the Bundestag in 1998.

During my political career as city councillor and chairman of various ecological associations, and as founder and manager of the "Hammelburger Solarstromgesellschaft", I focused mainly on questions of energy, transport and waste policy. The peace movement and the fight against right wing radicalism have also always been very important to me.

Although these fields may seem very diverse, most of them are actually directly connected to the issue of energy security. I came to realise that a new energy policy, which is based on renewable energies, is key not only to solving the life-threatening ecological problems facing the world, but also to its economical, social and peace problems. It was this belief that motivated me to become politically active.

The Green parliamentary group has already brought about a turnaround in energy policy, the essential component of which is renewable energies. These could not only cover the worldwide energy demand, but even exceed it many times over. It is also important from the point of view of world peace and development to implement an ecologically and economically sound new energy policy. This is the only way to avoid ever more wars about increasingly scarce oil resources.
