Spokesperson on youth, generations and higher education policy
My name is Kai Gehring. I serve the new parliamentary group as a Green elected representative from the Ruhr Region, and aged 27, I am the youngest Green Member of the Bundestag. In Berlin I want to devote all my energy to supporting the coming generations. My political focus is on children and young people, and school and university education. I became a member of the Green Party in 1998 because I wanted to act against injustice and discrimination, and my borough branch was my first port of call. In early 1999 I co-founded the Youth League of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and took a leading role in building it up. I have been on its executive committee for three years. In the Federal Parliament I see myself as a partner and advocate of the younger generation. I would like to contribute new impulses and ideas to creating a more equitable youth welfare and educational policy. Here I am primarily concerned with better access to training, university education and careers. We need to do more about child poverty, educational disadvantage and youth unemployment. For me, intergenerational equity means the young and the old developing joint solutions to the demographic questions facing us. In my view, opposition requires the development of progressive – and realistic – concepts. With this in mind, I look forward to working with you.
