I was born in Turkey in 1967 and hold law degrees from the universities of Ankara (Turkey) and Heidelberg. During my studies, I worked for many years as an academic assistant at the European Documentation Centre of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg. Since 2000, I have been Chairperson of the Federal Foreigners Advisory Board, a body I co-founded in 1998.

I was the first foreigner to be appointed to the broadcasting commission of Südwestrundfunk (SWR), which I was a member of from 1998 to 2008. During that time I was also elected as a deputy member of the Programming Commission at ARD. In 2002, I was appointed by the Federal Defence Ministry as the first foreign member of the "Advisory Board on Matters Relating to the Internal Management of the Bundeswehr". From 2004 to 2009, I was a Member of Heidelberg City Council. Since 2009, I have represented my constituency of Pforzheim and Enzkreis in the Bundestag. I am a member of the lawyers' associations in Karlsruhe and Ankara. My wife and I have a five year-old son.
