I grew up in the south of Leipzig, in an area of severe environmental pollution. Lignite mining left deep holes in the landscape; villages in the way of the mining were simply flattened; the rivers were black and stank of phenol, and if you went past the chemical and briquette factories you had to hold your mouth and nose closed. As an individual it was almost impossible to change anything, so I took my first political steps during the late 1980s in an environmental initiative in the Leipzig area. I became properly active in autumn 1989, when I took part in the city's Monday demonstrations. The few weeks from 9 October to 9 November 1989 gave me a sense that it was possible to change society by non-violent means. We went through an unparalleled time of exceptional circumstances; suddenly it was fun to read the newspapers and there was so much to do. In early 1990 I became involved with the local Green branch in my home town of Markkleeberg, and we spent the year in what seemed like a non-stop election campaign. During the following years I was primarily concerned with local Green politics. Here, the years until 1994 were the most exciting, because it was really possible to change things at this level too.

I gradually became involved with the Alliance 90/The Greens at other levels, and in 2005 I became a member of the Bundestag, because since 2004 - after ten years' absence – there is finally a Green group in the provincial legislature of Saxony.
