Having grown up in Heimbach, just a few hundred metres from today's Eifel National Park, I was involved in conservation-related topics – from protecting eagle owl breeding grounds to maintaining old orchards – as a child already. I joined the Greens as a 19 year-old in 1989 when a District Association was founded in Heimbach. In my work with the Greens – among others in my role as a Member of Düren County Council since 1994 – I was influenced by the regional disputes surrounding the brown coal open cast mining sites in Hambach, Inden and Garzweiler. Back then I was outraged, as I still am today, that whole landscapes should be bulldozed and the climate destroyed for power stations that waste 60 percent of the energy by emitting it into the environment as steam. Due not least to the many years I spent working as an academic assistant to the Green State Parliamentary Group in North-Rhine Westphalia, my main focus still involves the discussions surrounding the use of coal and nuclear power and the development of climate-friendly alternatives in the form of renewable energies, cogeneration and other high-efficiency technologies. I look forward to maintaining my commitment to a sustainable energy policy in the Bundestag as well.
