In 1980 I became involved with the citizens' initiative against the proposed new runway at Frankfurt airport. At the time I was running a children's day care centre in Frankfurt. There was relatively little space for children in cities, noise and air pollution was high, and I was absolutely against sacrificing yet more recreational areas to the airport extension. I came to the Greens through my involvement in the protest movement. In this party I found – and continue to find – a forum for my political concerns. Ecology, youth, the family and education were subjects that were particularly important to me in the following years on local councils and the provincial legislature of Hesse.
