Chairman Committee on Humanitarian Aid and Human Rights

Commitees

  • Committee on Humanitarian Aid and Human Rights (chair. + m.)
  • Defence Committee (m.)

I have been a member of the Green Party since 1983. I worked ten years as Head of the Environment Department and four years as Treasurer in Frankfurt. In 1990 I was involved in founding the Climate Alliance of European Cities with Indigenous Rainforest Peoples. Since 1999, I have worked in foreign policy and human rights – for the United Nations in Kosovo, in Guatemala and Afghanistan, and as Human Rights Representative for the SPD/Green government. In the Bundestag I aim to bring human rights to the foreground of German politics. For me, human rights have increasingly become the touchstone of Green policy in terms of foreign, European, development and security policy. We must address the ongoing, severe breaches of human rights in our own times and join forces with civil society and international organisations to protect human rights both in Germany and throughout the world. In this, we must focus above all on preventing genocide, crimes against humanity and any further spread of poverty and hunger. We must consistently uphold the discussions in Germany, Europe and the United Nations concerning the universal validity of the values set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In a way, one is always in opposition as a human rights activist. Our situation in the 17th legislative period is therefore nothing new to me.
