Spokesperson on development policy
I joined the Green Party in 1983 because I wanted to support the party's work for environmental protection, the peace movement and the women's movement.
My political career is a result of the women's movement. My desire to become politically active was triggered by the increased self-awareness I gained during an encounter group, and I did voluntary work for the human rights organisation TERRE DES FEMMES. We provided information about sex tourism, honour killings and genital mutilation, and organised demonstrations against inhuman working conditions in free-trade areas (South Korea).
After I moved to Lemgo in North Rhine-Westfalia (NRW) in 1989, the Greens asked me to stand for the municipal council, and I jumped into the cold water of local politics. A little later I was involved with regional politics and from 1995 - 2005 was Green spokeswoman on the Committee on Children, Youth and Family Affairs and the European and One World Policy Committee of the provincial legislature of NRW. In addition to campaigning for an improvement in children's day care, youth welfare and educational policy, I opposed the financing by the WestLB bank of an oil pipeline in Ecuador and the resulting destruction of the means of subsistence of the local population. During the last legislative term I was also able to strengthen Green contribution to European policy as committee chairwoman, and I represented the legislature at the European Congress of Local and Regional Authorities.
